English II Honors 4/24 A- 4/25 B SUB work

4/24 A Day English classes- Keep this handout, highlight it, take notes on it, and make it look like you actively read it. This will be a grade. Do not lose this handout. You should constantly refer to the directions throughout the class period.

  1. Mr. Dunlap hands out this blog and students volunteer to read aloud to class, the assignment listed for today assignments
  2. If you didn't finish your test. Mr. Dunlap will pass back your unfinished test for you to finish. If you didn't take your test, you will need to take it. Make sure you record your answers on a separate piece of paper. ALL STUDENTS MUST REMAIN QUIET UNTIL ALL TESTS HAVE BEEN TURNED INTO MR. DUNLAP. DO NOT TALK WHILE STUDENTS ARE TESTING.
  3. If you finish the test before others you should work on any of the following (QUIETLY at your seat)

-Make sure your R#45 (example still on board) has at least 15 entries. Remember the things you record should support your thesis. The more book support you record on R#45, the better your paper will be.

-Go to the table at the front of class, and take your own copy of the Literary Analysis Guide and the two model essays on Literary Analysis (conch paper, Fitzgerald paper). Read the part about support for the Literary Anaysis paper from Topic Sentence to Clincher/Concluding Sentence. Then look at the support in the model essays. Compare the items the guide tells you belong in the support with the model essays.

4. When EVERYONE has turned in their test to Mr. Dunlap, he will handout the following:

-Peer Editing Sheet Introduction

When you get this handout, write your name where it says writer's name.

Before you exchange introductions with someone in the class, make sure you consider the following:

-that their introduction must include the name of the book and author

- it should have a linking sentence before the thesis that connects the thesis to the rest of the introduction

- that you should be honest about whether the person's intro. is engaging. If it isn't and you write that it is, you aren't helping the person.

-the background information should give enough background so that if someone hadn't read the book, they would understand it. It shouldn't throw in book terms or names without explaining who or what they are.

5) Have someone you trust fill out your editing sheet while reading your introduction. You can have more than one person fill it out, just make sure they all put their names.

6)DUE Monday: Support for Essay. See ABOVE regarding reading the Guide/Models for directions and R#45. If you do not have your support on Monday, then you will not have the advantage of someone reviewing it for you.

3/25 - B Day English Classes

  1. Mr. Dunlap to handout this blog. A volunteer will read today's directions. You do not need to read the directions for the A day classes, as you have already completed that lesson.
  2. This is your blog to keep, please write on it, highlight it, take notes on it, or make it look like you have actively read it. I will grade you on this when I return. Keep it.
  3. Mr. Dunlap will handout the following:

-Things Fall Apart- Peer Editing the Body

-Things Fall Apart- Literary Analysis Conclusion

4)If you wrote your support, as was assigned, exchange papers with someone you trust and have them fill out your Peer editing worksheet. If you didn't write your support, then write your support. You can have more than one person edit your support for you. Also, have someone edit your paper for spelling, punctuation, or grammar errors. You might want to read your paper out loud to the person so you catch some of your own mistakes, and also because they may not completely understand what you are trying to write.

5) Next look at the Literary Analysis Guide handout and Model Essays. Read what you are supposed to have in the Conclusion of your Essay. Then read the model essays' conclusions. You can do this by yourself, or you can do it in your group. After reviewing the conclusion, write your conclusion on the paper provided. Due Tuesday if you don't finish in class.

6) When you come to class on Tuesday, you should have the following. An introduction peer editing sheet- filled out in completion for your introduction, plenty of support and the support editing sheet filled out completely by a peer, a conclusion.

Yearbook 4/11-4/22

DVD Project due 4/16-A
4/17-B
Must have all 3 parts- or points will be deducted
must be turned in on time or points will be deducted

CLEAN OUT BOX
All items associated with a spread MUST be cleaned out of box and placed in the correct copy envelope today. This is a grade. Last chance.

3) Bid Project- This is a project that will have many parts. Please pay close attention during instruction of this project, and turn every part in on time Late parts will not be accepted as ample time is given for groups to complete assignment in class.

Part 1) On your OWN, Brainstorm the following 3 categories for things that would have made this year better. Teacher explains in detail.
1)Yearbook Company
2)Photographer
3)YB Staff

Make a chart of all the things that would have made this year better from each. You can use any of the following to help you with your list: (expectations, pricing, equipment needed to produce, equipment needed to teach, workshops and price, quality, performance of yearbook rep, performance of photographer, performance of staff, ways to supplement income, solutions to common yb issues (no sales), senior, uc, personality pictures, quality of products, advertising/posters, software, delivery of product, commission pictures, coverage, etc)

Part 2) Join together with 1 or 2 group members and
1)TAKE your lists and combine them into a separate list/chart. This must be on a new sheet of paper
2)Add to the group list things which you brainstorm as a group
3) Search through current yearbooks' colophons for resources they had which you could potentially add to your group list/chart
4) Make sure there is a minimum of 20 items under each column

TURN IN PART 1 and 2-
PART 1- individual list/chart (each person's)
Part 2- Group list (minimum of 20 items per column)
Turn in all work together in one of your folders
Due Thursday 4/17 B and 4/18 A

PART 3- Lists returned (part 1 and 2)

Take your group list and revised if needed. Now, eliminate any thing listed that isn't realistic or revise it to something more realistic. Research each item in detail ( if applicable). For example, if your group put new computers, you must research what type of computers you will be asking for in detail. The following description was found calling a computer store for the best specifications for a computer for publication and digital image production in 2005.

3 - Pentium 4 computers, 800 FSB Systems or comparable with:3.0 Ghz, 1Gb Ram (minimum), 200 Gb HD, DVD-RW, Windows XP Professional, flat screen 19-inch monitors (minimum)

This means you will have to search the internet, call places, ask experts.

For items that describe quality or expectation from people, be specific about what you expect. Also think about potential problems with the item you are asking for and include solutions. For example:

Photographer
1) The photographer will provide student identification cards for students grades 9th through 12th personalized by student name and student number by September 1st. All IDs must be in the same format as the IDs printed on campus. Examples will be given to accommodate. Photographer will print these pictures from all student pictures taken during senior photography or underclass photography. If a student refused to take a picture or enrolls after pictures, the photographer is not liable to produce an ID for that student.

or STAFF
1) Staff members and their parents will sign a contract stating if they do not meet their deadlines, they will receive a zero on that deadline, which most likely will result in failure of the term, and potential removal from the class. Students and their parents will be expected to abide by their signed agreement.

When finished, you should have 3 categories of well-thought out, researched, and detailed expectations. This must be typed and be reviewed for mistakes or grammatical errors before turning in. Each category must have a minimum of 10 detailed expectations. Extra credit will be given to those groups that have more than 10 per category. Make sure each group member's name is on typed project, and that it has been saved to a secure location so that it can be accessed again.

Part 3 DUE as specified on Monday 4/28 A- Day or 4/29 for groups with B Day students.

Megan, Jordan, Dee- Index project. Pictures of index students and ID pictures must be taken, downloaded, and saved in proper location or inserted into index spread by tomorrow. DVD Project assigned. Due April 29th. Speak to Adrian.

Indexed names must be revised by tomorrow.

Andrew, Nicole, Louvennia
Revise yb application and make it more specific to Terry Parker. Come up with a list of 15 interview questions each (total of 45 questions), which you would think will help route out the students who will not succeed in the yearbook program. Save the revised application in a secure location and print it out as well. Type interview questions.

Mass Media 3/7 update

All work for Deadline 5 should be finished by today, except for the following which need to be turned in ASAP:

Track, Flag football, Tennis, Baseball-both, Athletic Directory(please do ASAP)

Remember the warning given to you at the beginning of this week. If you haven't finished something that is past due, it has to go into the publisher.

This means if you don't do it, and I get to it before you, you don't get a grade for it. I've already started doing it. Remember this isn't just for a grade, we won't get our yearbook if we don't turn the work in.

Students who didn't sell enough ads will have a chance to make that up through yearbook sales.

Next week is FCAT. A lot of you juniors/seniors think you are going to skip. We will be working on finishing the sports spreads we couldn't this week (Only baseball, track, flag football). We also will be working on proof corrections. Keep in mind if you don't show up, then you can't fix your proofs. I cannot wait around while you skip school to let you fix them. We our way past our deadlines. So either you come to yearbook and fix them, or I will and you won't get the grade for it. It's your choice.

Also remember you can always come after school and work.

Also, now that we should be finished with out deadlines, the only way you can leave class is by first asking me, then letting me sign your planner, then signing out on the hall pass log and then back in on the hall pass log. If you don't follow this procedure, I will be forced to write you up. Some of you have been taking advantage, and I'm tired of it.

Also, if you are just sitting around the class because you assume you're finished with things, you are receiving a class participation grade of zero. It is a yearbook class. How many times do I have to remind you that people need help with things. There is always, always something that needs to be done. Please get up and ask and stop trying to text message your friends. Laziness will not be tolerated.

The days I will see you for FCAT:

Louvennia/Tiffany- review their layout pet peeves with class. All reporters sign and turn into basket for grade.

Class takes notes on next deadline and Ad information. Due to in basket for grade. Make sure you right your specific deadline information on notes before turning them in.

$500 Ad grade going on this 3rd grading term-
1/4, 1/2, full page ads always available for sell until March. You must get the payment and artwork when you sell the ad for credit.

Also remember that your ads won't count towards your grade unless you have their artwork in for seniors and their artwork and payment in for businesses.

Layout Test coming soon- You will be tested on all of the things you should already know such as:

Main headlines-48 pt Official Tyrant- apply effects to text only and colors according to the section

Captions- all in 10 pt Genesis- you can never change the size to a smaller or larger one-you can change the type of caption if you need more room

sidebar/alternative copy- 12 pt Genesis(except for underclass section- quotes are in 10 pt to fit)

Lead Ins- In 90 percent color of section. Title just as you would a book. EX: Things Fall Apart, Line Up, In Perfect Rhythm, In the Mood. Ideally, should be separate from caption

Photo Bys: 6 pt Genesis- bottom right hand of picture- name only- should hug picture

Colors for in-red, up-blue, green-out - codes are posted

Sidebar headline- must contain section title, must be in correct color, and must have effects applied to text only. It is in 24 pt.

Dominant picture- apply effect- object only.

Any solid object, apply effects of that section as long as it doesn't distort the writing on that object.

Cannot bleed objects over gutter such as faces in dominant pictures, captions, or move lines.

Use the percentages given to you on the handout templates labeled for each section. For example, the big curved bar will be at 60 percent on whatever section, in whatever color, always. The colored caption boxes will be at 20 percent on all spreads always. The dominant pictures without a caption box, should have a caption box added on top of the dominant in an obscure location in transparency, paper, 40 percent, no stroke.

Strokes should be removed from all items which don't require one. This is almost anything you have a stroke on.h

Move line at bottom- 12 pt Genesis, cannot bleed over gutter. When you use the surveys, be careful to spell things correctly, especially the names. Make sure you put Used on the surveys and return them to Megan.

Main headline- must- relate to dominant picture. It doesn't have to have the section name in it (ex:in, out). The sidebar headline does have to have the section name- and its already been decided for you. Ask me if you don't know what yours is. (ex: Whats In)

Whenever you take information from your reporter, you should always verify that they have their reporter checklist completely filled out beforehand, and that they've had Andrew- the copy editor sign the checklist giving them approval.

Reporters information should be typed when it comes to you, and ideally you should have them save it directly into your page file. This way you can copy and paste the information and you'll never lose it.

There is a spell check in InDesign and you MUST USE IT.

Reporters- Test coming soon-
You need to know things like
DON'T INCLUDE YOUR OPINION, YOUR ADVICE, OR ANY EDITORIALIZING. YOU DON'T SPEAK TO THE READER. YOU SHOW THEM.
ALL Captions have Lead Ins. They are caption titles and are separate from the caption themselves. Line Up is an example of a Lead In.
Captions (separate from their Lead Ins) CANNOT start with names, titles, or group references. You must use one of the many ways given to you for how to start a caption.

You have to pay attention and sincerely fill out your spread checklist, as it determines whether you do what you need to for your final grade. Things like check the electronic alpha list- are on that checklist. If you haven't been doing this, points have been coming off your grade.

Copy, the story that goes with many spreads, is in the past tense. You won't say things like. The girl's basketball team is doing great this season, because that would be an opinion and its in the present tense. If you have a problem doing this see Andrew or Ms. Batten.

You must feature quotes from at least 2 adults, and 3 students from different backgrounds in your copy. Its not just something we made up on your observation sheet, there is a reason. Those quotes should go in your copy. Your copy should always be long enough to allow the layout person plenty of copy to fill up their spread.

Don't interview your friends, people that will be all over the yearbook, and siblings or friends of people you know. That isn't being a reporter its being a jerk.

Don't ever say: When asked why.... just put the persons quote and then use an exclamatory phrase. Remember said is dead, try using other things. Also don't start with the exclamatory phrase.
EX: Don't: Cindy Lauper exclaimed, "I like to sing."
Instead: "I like to sing, " Cindy Lauper exclaimed. "I also enjoy dancing and playing the piano."

Identification captions: The name of individuals featured up to five, sometimes includes grade level and titles. The only caption which doesn't require a Lead In.

Basic Captions- In present tense only and describe action only.

Expanded: Basic caption (present tense)+extra information in past tense. Must include quote and go beyond the picture

YOU MUST HAVE Andrew check your copy before you give it to your Layout person in the spread envelope.

Always keep your signed interviews, and information related to the spread in the copy envelope for spread or in your own folder. You will probably need it one day.

All students up to five must be identified by first and last name in pictures. If there are five or more students in the picture, then you can refer to them as a group. So, if you have a picture of students in class, and you only put the names of the two students in the center of the picture, but not the kid sitting behind him visibly, then you've messed up, majorly.
-Review the way you should start your copy/story- Getting the Story Straight handout
-Review the things you should leave out of copy- Getting the Story Straight handout

Proof Correction- A lot of you will be given proofs for corrections. It is vital that you do not lose the proof page, and that you protect it. Don't go around showing it to everyone. Get your proof corrections in immediately so that they don't publish those pages with those mistakes.
